People love blaming the model.
And to be fair, sometimes they’re right.
Sometimes the model is weak.
Sometimes the tools are not connected properly.
Sometimes the task just should not be handled by an agent yet.
But a lot of the time, the agent was set up to fail before it ever started.
The job was vague.
The context was missing.
The rules were unclear.
There were no examples.
No approval point.
No real definition of done.
Then the agent gives back something messy and everyone says, “See, AI is not ready.”
Maybe.
Or maybe the work around the agent was not ready.
That is the part people skip.
A good agent does not just need a better prompt.
It needs a clear operating environment.
It needs to know:
- What am I actually doing?
- What context matters?
- What should I never do?
- What does good work look like?
- When do I stop?
- When does a human need to approve this?
Without that, the agent is basically guessing.
And guessing is fine when you are playing around.
It is not fine when the work touches customers, leads, money, records, or your reputation.
That is when “AI output” becomes operational risk with a nicer interface.
So before blaming the agent, I’d check the setup first.
Was the job clear?
Was the context available?
Were the boundaries written down?
Was there an approval gate?
Was there a stop condition?
Was there a way to review and correct the output?
If not, the first fix is probably not “use a better agent.”
The first fix is to define the work better.
Better agents do not just come from better models.
They come from better operators of the work.

Before asking an agent to do real work, answer these:
1. What exact job am I giving it? 2. What context does it need so it does not guess? 3. What should it never do? 4. What examples show good vs bad output? 5. What needs human approval before it happens? 6. What does “done” actually mean? 7. How will I correct it after the first attempt?
If you cannot answer those yet, the agent is probably not ready.
That does not mean AI cannot help.
It just means the work needs to be defined before you automate it.
